History

We cannot believe ChildROC has been running for almost three years serving the Greater Rochester community! It took a lot of planning, organizing, and most importantly, the dedicated efforts from our pool of talented volunteers!

ChildROC was established on January 29, 2018 by a couple of full-time mothers perplexed by the lack of bilingual English-Chinese storytime and books for young kids in the Greater Rochester area. The group started with the name Rochester Chinese Storytime (RCS) as it was the primary focus for the group in early 2018.

Throughout the year of 2018, ChildROC had delivered a series of theme-based bilingual storytime, a kids Zodiac show at Memorial Art Gallery, started Kids Drama Group, its own Chinese Class, Parenting Workshop, and had been thriving to expand its scope to serve the community better, while maintaining its most popular bilingual storytime series.

ChildROC initially worked with Chinese School of Rochester to reserve event spaces and has since established a long-term collaboration with the Brighton Memorial Library (BML) in the Children’s Program in its own identity. In September 2019, ChildROC extended its popular bilingual storytime program to Henrietta Public Library serving the younger kids on a monthly basis.

The ChildROC Children's Chorus Group was established in early 2020 and expected to deliver a performance at the Lunar New Year celebration at Brighton Library on January 19, 2020, among a few others.

The motivation to found ChildROC originated from communication with the International Chinese Reading Association(ICRA), a NPO founded in 2016 in the greater Boston area, advocating Read Story, Learn Chinese. ICRA has generously supported and guided ChildROC from inception to an established entity that is well known in the Greater Rochester area and that has attracted a large group of volunteers with a diversified background who are all enthusiastic for one mission - creating an immersion environment for kids to learn and discover.

As ChildROC continues to grow and recently hit the record high attendance at its 1/19/2020 Chinese New Year celebration (counted 212, many could not get in the door), Michelle is leading the effort to formalize the organization, so that ChildROC could serve the community even better in 2020. Stay tuned!
